Les quelque 4400 policiers de Montréal contribuent actuellement pour 24% de leur régime de retraite, la Ville assumant les 76% restants. Selon M. Francoeur, il s’agit d’un choix «historique» selon lequel les policiers ont accepté des salaires plus bas en échange de meilleures conditions de retraite.

The Montreal police union says the reforms will cost the average police officer $114 a week or $6,000 a year, nearly 10 per cent of their average salaries. The union argues it negotiated lower salaries than its counterparts in the suburban forces in order to obtain better pensions.

Montreal police officer can retire with full pension after 30 years of service. The average police officer at full salary earns roughly $75,000. He or she will receive a pension worth 80 per cent of that upon retirement.
